St Ninian's Kirk Site

Long term excavations at Whithorn, in open ground near the Romanesque church, uncovered remains of a stone chapel which has been identified as possibly the site of St Ninian's first church, the 'Candida Casa'. Although the exact dates of St Ninian are not known he is thought to have been a fifth centruy British bishop who founded a church in the Whithorn area. The Whithorn area is closely associated with St Ninian, and the area became an important pilgrimage site in the Middle Ages. There are several churches which may be directly linked to him.
